5 Celebrities Who Possess The Geek Gene
Celebrities – they’re just like us; great and geeky and born with those studious smarts. Except they’re also hot and rich and possess perfect skin. From Natalie Portman’s prim and proper Harvard past, to Vin Diesel’s totally hardcore gamer habits, here is my list of 5 celebrities who you didn’t know were geeks.
She draws praise for her acting chops, even snagging an Oscar for her performance as a disturbed ballerina in Black Swan, and has a face gorgeous enough to light up ads for Christian Dior. Despite all the glamour, Natalie Portman is also geeky.
Taking on the role of Princess Leia’s Mother may have been a bit of a hint, but her geeky tendencies go deeper than that. She graduated with a degree in psychology from Harvard University, and she even co-authored research papers that were published in academic journals.
James Franco hit the genetic jackpot. He fits the image of tall, dark, and handsome perfectly, which certainly helped boost his acting career. He isn’t satisfied getting by on looks alone, though – quite the opposite, in fact. He studies so much, it is amazing he has time to act.
He wrapped up his M.F.A. at Columbia University in 2010, and he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in English at Yale. This is all while maintaining a booming career in Hollywood, notably securing an Oscar nomination for his role in the gripping survival film, 127 Hours.
Usually known for his athletic physique and daring roles in high-action movies, Vin Diesel may seem like an unlikely geek. Turns out he is positively geeky, though.
He explained to Conan O’Brien during an interview that he used to play Dungeons and Dragons, a role playing game that isn’t exactly known for being chic. Not just for a year or two, either – he played for 24 years. Now, his hardcore gamer side focuses on video games. He even owns a video game production company, which develops and distributes products that usually feature the actor.
As the frontman for Nine Inch Nails, the highly successful industrial rock group, Reznor comes across as nothing but cool. However, some say that the band would have never got off the ground without Reznor’s geeky side.
He graduated with a degree in computer engineering, and he applied his love for technology to creating the industrial sound that has grown to be so popular. Furthering his geek cred, Reznor created music for Quake, a first-person shooter game.
Mila Kunis is perhaps best known for being the voice of homely Meg Griffin on Family Guy, but do not let that fool you – she is gorgeous. Many people seem to agree. She regularly makes “hottest” lists for publications like Maxim, FHM, GQ, and Men’s Health.
She is also a geek, and is not ashamed to say so. Her geeky vice is World of Warcraft, a habit she is happy to discuss. She even explained in an interview once that her gaming habits had started bordering on addiction, so she had to temporarily tone it down a notch.
Just because celebrities are hot and famous doesn’t mean they can’t be geeks. There are plenty of stars who indulge in geeky habits long after entering into the glamorous world of fame.
