Mobile gaming may be on the rise, but console gaming still has its place in the hearts of both retro and modern gamers.
This is due mainly to the complexity of the storylines, the addictive nature of the gameplay and the aesthetic attention given to console games. To demonstrate this point we have picked out 5 recent successful video games that were highly anticipated and well received by scores of gaming fans around the world.
Call of Duty: Black Ops II
Activision Blizzard followed the success of this first Call of Duty franchise with another highly successful rendition of the game. This multiplayer game is available on all platforms, including PlayStation3, Xbox 360, Wii U and it’s available as a PC game. Call of Duty: Black Ops II follows the familiar gameplay, strategy, and storytelling style as used by all games within the Call of Duty franchise. The ‘thrown in the thick of it’ nature of the game is easily picked up by any gamer familiar with the franchise. It’s the graphical detail, the range of weaponry, the single and online multiplayer modes and the increasing complexity of missions that keeps gamers coming back for more.
Far Cry 3
Ubisoft’s original spin of a male Tomb Raider like game and character was bound to be a big hit with gamers, especially since the Tomb Raider series seemed to have collapsed (interestingly, a new Tomb Raider game is due out and is set to make a storm, and it will no doubt have taken inspiration from the Far Cry series). However it was the interesting use of dimensions and gameplay that made the original Far Cry a hit with fans. Not one to shy away from success, Ubisoft continued to adapt and evolve the very features that made the original a big hit, and Far Cry 3 is set to be one of the best selling games in recent times. Far Cry 3 is available on the PC, PS3 and Xbox360.
DmC: Devil May Cry
The Devil May Cry franchise originally launched on the PS2 and it has managed to successfully migrate from the older console to the new one. Dante, the death defying, damage inflicting monster slaying main character has certainly undergone a redesign, but early reviews have made it clear that this retro gaming character can dish out the damage that gamers know and love. Capcom is well known for providing console games with a similar look and feel, and they are a hit with console gamers time and time again. DmC: Devil May Cry is only available on the latest Sony and Microsoft consoles.
Assassin’s Creed III
If there is one series of games out there that has defined a generation of gamers it would undoubtedly be the Assassin’s Creed series. Ubisoft’s mesmerizing tale of the rise and fall of a secretive order of assassin’s has been quite literally unstoppable. Despite the repetitive nature of the original game the Assassin’s Creed franchise has gone on to be one of the most successful and most loved gaming series.
Halo is one of the few gaming franchises that is limited to the Xbox and PC only. Given that they are Microsoft’s products, it’s obvious why Microsoft would want to limit this highly successful franchise to just its own consoles and operating systems. (Another example of highly successful, but Xbox only gaming franchises would be the phenomenal Gears of War series). Despite being restricted to only Microsoft enabled systems the Halo series has gone on to conquer the gaming world, and it has in fact convinced more than a few Sony diehards to invest in an Xbox.
