While it might be true that convention season is winding down, here in Houston the con is still on…at least for three days. Amazing Houston Comic-Con kicked off on Friday, and for those who seek a refuge from the hustle and bustle of commercial cons, AHCC serves to put the “comic” back in Comic-Con. AHCC offers the best in pop culture, artists, cosplayers and entertainment, but at a less hectic pace. And while; yes, AHCC might not be as large as some of the more well known Texas conventions, it’s still a wonderful place to gawk at the amazing talent on display.
AHCC boasts a respectable variety of artists, comic creators, writers and entertainers, from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles creator Kevin Eastman, legendary X-Men writer Chris Claremont and Marvel Comics “Civil War” artist Steve McNiven to Harley Quinn artist Chad Hardin, Marvel “Star Wars” illustrator Rick Hoberg, science fiction author Mat Nastos, and “Amazing Spider-Man” artist Sam De La Rosa. This is just a small sampling of the collaborative talent AHCC brings to Houston.
All of the talent at AHCC has been accommodating, gracious and reasonably priced, all of which is a refreshing change from the norm where even a glimpse of a “celebrity” at another convention could cost fans – on a good day – upwards of $60 a squint. The comic prices – after all it is a comic convention – are just as reasonable, with great deals to be had at every booth. AHCC is definitely the place to pick up that endlessly coveted issue you’ve had your eye on, but could never quite pull the trigger on.
Families will be happy to hear that AHCC is not only family friendly, but also has special events and programming for the kids. Heading into Sunday it’s Kid’s Day at the con, where kids 10 and under can receive a free sketch by Disney veteran artist Mat Nastos. Other contributing artists might include Ryan Kinkaid, April Grady Reyna, and Tony Fleecs (My Little Pony). Additional kids’ events include Super Happy Fun Cartoon Time, a Kid Costume Parade, and an all ages coloring session with Jessica Von Braun. (Check here for additional kid art events and schedules.)
So if you’re in the mood for some comic fun, without all the personal space invasion from everyone, then the Amazing Houston Comic-Con is on all this weekend.
