[UPDATE] – Warner Bros. has issued an official statement on this matter, although, it doesn’t clear much up. Henry’s agent also released a statement, which you can see after the original story.
A plethora of reports have come out today that are suggesting that Warner Bros. and Henry Cavill have parted ways in terms of his Superman character in the DC cinematic universe. It sounds like the studio isn’t interested in making any Superman standalone movies for the next few years, so after contract talks between Cavill’s WME reps and Warner Bros. broke down over a possible Shazam! cameo, it appears we will never see Cavill as Superman again.
All of this makes sense considering Cavill just revealed last week that he signed on to play Geralt in Netflix’s Witcher series, which will eat up a ton of his time over the coming years. That and the fact that the DC cinematic universe is mostly in shambles outside of the Wonder Woman franchise, it just make sense to move on from the actors that brought it to life. It make sense for the actors too, because it’s not like these films have done much for their careers besides make them defend subpar work to the media.
This move is also rumored to be happening because Warner Bros. and DC want to do a Supergirl origin story, which would essentially reboot that universe anyway. It just sounds like Warner Bros. are cleaning the DC actor slate, because it’s rumored that Ben Affleck will no longer play Batman movie forward, so if this turns out to be true, and Ben is really done playing the Bat, those are two major actors leaving major DC character roles due to the mediocre run of films they starred in.
Quite frankly, Cavill hasn’t done well as Superman since Man of Steel, so outside of his looks, which are spot on Supes, I’m not that sad that he’s leaving the character behind. His acting was stiff in BvS, and even worse in Justice League due to the whole mustache debacle, so his departure won’t affect me that much. I would have loved to have kept the whole Justice League cast intact, but after the suspect films in the DC franchise ruined fan expectations, I understand why the studio and certain actors are parting ways.
UPDATE from Warner Bros.:
“While no decisions have been made regarding any upcoming Superman films, we’ve always had great respect for and a great relationship with Henry Cavill, and that remains unchanged,” read the statement from a Warner Bros. spokesperson.
UPDATE from Cavill’s management:
Be peaceful, the cape is still in his closet. @wbpictures has been and continues to be our partners as they evolve the DC Universe. Anticipate a WB statement later today.
