Apple Announces iPhone 4S Release on 10/14, No iPhone 5

[Update] Apple has finally unveiled the successor to the iPhone 4, and it is…….the iPhone 4S (boo, but yay)!  The iPhone 4S will come with the A5 chip found in the iPad 2, which will make it 7 times faster than the iPhone 4.  On top of that it can now render graphics much better, which lead to the exclusive announcement of Infinity Blade 2 for the iPhone 4S.  The 4S battery life has been improved as well, not that the 4’s life was all that bad, but now the 4S can get up to 8 hours of talk time on the 3G network, with 6 hours of straight up 3G browsing.

The 4S is the first phone to have dueling antennas, which will allow for separate transmission and receive rates by dynamically switching between the two to optimize performance.  In fact, Apple is claiming that the 4S can match real-world 4G speeds even though it’ll remain a 3G device.  In addition to the dual antennas the iPhone 4S will be a world phone due to the fact that it’ll have both GSM and CDMA antennas.

The next upgrade in the 4S relates to its 8MP camera with a resolution of 3264×2448, which Apple claims is also a faster performing camera than any other on the market.  It can snap picks within .5 seconds of each other at the 8MP resolution.  The new camera will also have 5 elemental lenses and a hybrid IR filter.  The video resolution will now be at 1080p with some additional features in the recorder as well.

Apple was not done with the new features yet as the iPhone 4S will feature a voice recognition software named Siri.  Supposedly you can ask it questions and it’ll answer them.  Apple asked about the weather on stage and Siri responded with a forecast.  Pretty cool stuff if it works.  Voice recognition until this point has been hit or miss at best, but if anyone is going to perfect it, Apple would be my guess.  Outside of driving situations talking to my phone seems useless, but in a car it’ll definitely save me from running over kids at a crosswalk.

What do you think?  Are these upgrades enough to justify a purchase?  The event is still going on so more details could be coming out as I type, but is what Apple has shown enough for you to give up your 4?  Personally, I’m on the fence.  If we find out that the iPhone 5 won’t be out for another year, then yes I’ll get the 4S, but if the 5 is only a few months away I may wait.  I like new revision numbers and not version upgrades if you know what I mean.  Stay tuned for further information.  You’ve been slightly let down…

[UPDATE] Apple announced that the iPhone 4S will ship on 10/14, and it’ll come in 3 flavors, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB.  Prices based on a new 2-year contract are $199, $299, and $399 respectively.  It’ll be available in both black and white versions, and for the first time it’ll be available for Sprint users.  I still want the 5, but it looks like we’re stuck with the 4S for now.
