Before the prequels, Darth Vader was easily the most intimidating villain in cinema history, but then George made Episodes I-III. In those three films this imposing force of evil gets reduced to a whiny little boy who hates sand and doesn’t come off as a bad boy until the last minute, at which point his switch to the dark side feels hollow at best. Seeing Anakin Skywalker’s journey to the Dark Side ultimately cheapened the character, and turned Hayden Christensen’s portrayal of him into a joke. I don’t blame Hayden as much as I do George, mostly because he wrote the script these actors had to act off of, and he directed them, so in the end he got the performances he wanted.
With that being said it’s so hard to look at Darth Vader these days and not see him as less of a badass due to how Anakin was portrayed. To highlight this fact, the Auralnauts YouTube channel has created an amazing parody video that shows what Darth Vader would have sounded like if his James Earl Jones voice box shorted out. Imagine the Dark Lord of the Sith sounding like a whiny monotone man who sacrificed everything he loved for a lie. It’s literally a visual representation of the fall of Darth Vader from the mantle of cinema villain mastery. It proves my point that in learning more about Anakin Skywalker, we only weakened his villainous alter ego.
Head on up above to see how weak Vader would have looked like if he always sounded like Anakin Skywalker.
