Del Toro’s DJ Character Will Be a Shady Hacker In ‘The Last Jedi’
EW has shed a sliver of light on Benicio Del Toro’s character in Star Wars: The Last Jedi in it latest exclusive piece on the film. While the article didn’t reveal his actual name, it did hint at his role in the narrative and galaxy for that matter.
It’s still not clear if DJ is a villain, at least according to Del Toro who told EW, “I don’t know if he’s a villain. People are saying that, but it’s like they read a different script than I read.” Even Disney’s official one liner on him is cryptic:
“DJ is an enigmatic figure whose tattered, threadbare clothes and lackadaisical attitude conceal a sharp mind and expert skills.”
The article did reveal that DJ will play a major role in Finn and Rose’s mission that was teased yesterday. Apparently they will be seeking him out for his hacking skills, as he’s one of the galaxy’s best splicers (Star Wars hackers). Although, that doesn’t mean he’s a good guy. Boyega described him to EW as, “dodgy and only in it for financial gain. He doesn’t fight for any side.” It sounds like he’s a war dog, or someone who thrives on playing both sides in a conflict for personal gain.
My money is on the fact that he’ll eventually break good and join the Resistance. I think he’ll be a quasi-Lando-type who ends up joining after the bad guys really screw him over in a deal. Take it to the bank!
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
