Disney Promises Annual ‘Star Wars’ Movies Starting 2015
Disney unveiled big plans for the Star Wars franchise at CinemaCon, the annual meeting for the National Theater Owners Association. Walt Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn announced that starting 2015 Disney would produce a new Star Wars movie each year. When Disney bought Lucasfilm for $4 billion in 2012, it announced a new movie was in the works, but the scope of future movies was unknown until now.
We know the first film in the works, “Star Wars VII,” is a supposed sequel to the original trilogy (and rumored to bring back the original cast). But beyond 2015, plans for other sequels and possible spin-offs are left in the dark. Considering the expansive universe surrounding Star Wars, the possibilities for side-stories are virtually endless. And given Disney’s track record with franchises like The Avengers, they can have a bit of fun with the options.
1. A Boba Fett Movie
In the original trilogy, Boba Fett spends mere minutes on the big screen, but he remains a fan favorite alongside more featured villains like Vader and Maul. Even with the expanded story in “Episode II,” we have so much to learn about Boba Fett, and more importantly, his father Jango.
Possible Synopsis: A story that fills the gap between “Attack of the Clones” and “Return of the Jedi.” A story that tells the stories how Boba followed his father’s footsteps as a bounty hunter would be fascinating, and the movie could end with the capturing of Han Solo for his last assignment.
2. A Darth Sidious Movie
In the beginning of “Revenge of the Sith,” Emperor Palpatine, secretly known as Darth Sidious, told Anakin Skywalker a story about the Sith Lord’s former master, Darth Plagueis the Wise. The tale was an anecdote to fool Anakin into joining the dark side in order to obtain new powers, but the loose ends give us an opportunity to learn much more. We know Palpatine had his plan to rule the Empire from day one, but let’s see the origins of the idea.
Possible Synopsis: After killing his master in his sleep, Darth Sidious redefines the Sith Order and plots to take over the galaxy. The movie would follow his infiltration into politics as he becomes a new representative on the peaceful planet of Naboo.
3. The Son of Han and Leia
The fans already predict a possible son or daughter from Han or Leia in the next Star Wars film, but the movie likely won’t revolve around him or her. Let’s see a movie that walks us through the youth of a young Han Jr., either as a Jedi knight or a sharpshooter like his dad. Think of it like a young Indiana Jones, but good.
Synopsis: Young Han Jr. is crucial to the complete dismantling of the remaining Empire. Remember, after “Return of the Jedi,” there are still hundreds of Imperial ships roaming the galaxy, even without the leadership of Darth Vader or the Emperor.
4. A Jar Jar Movie
Just kidding. Seriously, I don’t care how many little kids think it would be “sooo funny,” this one just can’t happen.
