The wick on 2014 is almost completely burnt up, so it’s time to reflect on all of the awesome geekiness that came out over the past twelve months for us to consume. We’ve already released our Golden Buddha gaming awards, so it’s time to switch focus to the movie scene, which was packed full of great geekcentric films.

To choose our top ten a majority of the EB staff submitted their own top five picks, which was then used to formulate the site’s overall top ten. We also have a few honorable mentions that didn’t quite get enough votes to make the top ten, but they were recognized by our staff for their merits, so we decided to give them a bit of the spotlight.

Head on down below to check out the ten best geeky movies from 2014 as well as a glimpse of what films each staffer picked as their personal top five lists.

And now for Entertainment Buddha’s Top 10 Geek Movies of 2014!

10) Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Scenes like this don't come off as being ridiculous thanks to brilliant mo-cap performances and CGI.

Caesar returns and becomes conflicted between his former bond with humans, and the new ape society he has helped to lead and flourish since the outbreak of the virus that led to mankind’s downfall. The sequel to Rise shined in every sense of the word thanks to another brilliant performance by Andy Serkis, Master of the CG. The story was heartfelt and emotional, plus it helped move this rather excellent rebooted Apes franchise towards another hopeful sequel.

9) The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

Smaug welcomes you back to Middle-earth with a fiery introduction.

Peter Jackson’s time with Middle-earth on earth has come to an end with The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, and while many felt that a third Hobbit film was overkill, it still managed to entertain with impressive action set pieces and a few heartfelt goodbyes. Overall it was a nice end cap to six of the best movies to be made this century.

8) The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part One

Katniss’ journey is almost over thanks to the first part of a two part finale to complete The Hunger Games movie saga. Mockingjay Part One isn’t the best Hunger Games movie, but it helped to serve as a bridge between the second film and the ultimate film without sucking. Jennifer Lawrence once again shows why she has an Oscar already, and why she’ll be forever known as the real Katniss thanks to her heartfelt performance. It may not have had a true beginning and an end, but it sets up the final film perfectly with a splash of emotion at the end.
