The latest update from EW’s coverage of Solo: A Star Wars Story aims to flesh out a few more supporting cast members that will affect Han’s journey in the film, as well as his overall growth as a smuggler pilot and rogue. Two of the characters will be directly linked to Han, while the other may very well be the crime boss that Tobias Beckett (Woody Harrelson) works for, or is commissioned by to pull of the mega-heist we’ve heard teased in summaries of the film.
The article starts off with Woody’s character Tobias Beckett, who has been described as the de facto mentor for young Han. Although, according to this article, it doesn’t sound like Beckett seeks Han out, or necessarily wants to help him. While Beckett is a hardened criminal, it sounds like he does have a bit of a heart and some sort of moral code, which Han will inherently pick up from him and apply to his own life. Ron Howard explained Beckett’s role by saying, “he really shapes Han really more than anybody, as Han comes to realize that in a lawless time he needs to try to come to terms with some kind of moral code.”
Lawrence Kasdan also offered some insights into Beckett and his effect on Han. Kasdan told EW, “Han sort of forces himself into Woody’s life. It starts a relationship that has enormous impact on what kind of person Han will be.” So as I mentioned earlier it seems as if Han will seek out Beckett and force himself into his group, which makes sense considering that we know that Beckett makes Han prove himself with a train heist before letting him in on the big heist he has planned.
Thandie Newton’s Val was also touched upon in the article, but not many hardcore details were revealed. Kathleen Kennedy revealed that Val and Beckett are longtime acquaintances and have been partners for a long time. This is how Han meets her, but apparently she’s none too impressed with the young pilot. Jon Kasdan explained it by saying, “at first glance, (Val) doesn’t necessarily have total faith in Han — as a lot of people he meets in his life tend to feel about him. She’s a little skeptical of this kid when she meets him. And her relationship with him goes in, I think, an … interesting direction.” That last statement is pretty intriguing, so I think it could mean that she may try and take Han out, because to me Qi’ra is the love interest for Han in Solo, so I don’t see the older Val getting close to the younger Han.
The final character to get a few new details is Dryden Vos, who is played by Paul Bettany. Vos is described as being the Godfather of the crime world, and a debonair one at that. According to Jon Kasdan, Vos, who isn’t related to Quinlan Vos, is “way deeper in the crime world than anyone else that we meet in the movie.” I think Vos will indeed be the man that Beckett is pulling the heist for, because he sounds like a Jabba type, but without the slob factor. He runs part of the criminal underground, so it makes sense that he could be handing out big jobs to smaller criminals like Beckett. Although, I wouldn’t say that Beckett reports to Vos, or is under him in an org chart, he just gets jobs from him thanks to his deep connection to the criminal underworld.
Stay tuned for more Solo details as they become available.
