Many of the most memorable experiences in a video game come from boss fights. The epic battles against unspeakable evil and dastardly villains are often done so well that the majority of boss battles can feel like the stuff of legends. However, not every boss battle deserves a place in gamers’ hearts forever – plenty of boss battles can be downright terrible. From out of place mechanics, to stupidly frustrating difficulty curves, to the simply underwhelming, the list below takes a look at four boss battles that left most wishing they could erase the fight from their memories.
4) Matador – Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne:
Fighting Matador in Nocturne undoubtedly made more than one person throw their controller at a wall out of sheer frustration. Taking place fairly early within Nocturne’s lengthy story, the sudden increase of difficulty found within the Matador fight is a cruel awakening to the often unforgiving world of Shin Megami Tensei. Players who went through the first few hours of Nocturne recruiting demons and covering their various weaknesses found themselves ruing the very existence of the decoratively garbed Matador.
3) The Convicts – Dead Rising:
The Dead Rising franchise has more than its fair share of annoying boss fights, but few match the frustration caused by the Jeep driving Convicts caused. A mobile group of chaotic criminals, the Convict’s rained pain down on Dead Rising’s Frank West with baseball bats and a heavy machine gun mounted to their jeep. In a game where controls are certainly not a strong suit, fighting a gang of bloodthirsty prison escapees as they attempt to blast you into oblivion isn’t even remotely close to fun.
2) Lucien Fairfax – Fable II:
One of the most underwhelming boss fights in video game history, the final confrontation with Lucien is an exercise in how to let gamers down. Lucien’s constant dedication to his goals -becoming a god and reshaping the world of Albion – and the various acts of cruelty he inflicts on others, gives him all of the trimmings of a great villian. During the course of the Fable II, Lucien kills virtually everyone that the game’s hero loves, including his sister Rose and loyal dog, which leads towards what should be one of the most fulfilling and vengeful boss fights of all time. However, the final showdown against Lucien is anything but that. Players, eager to avenge both their dog and Rose, were eager to punish Lucien in battle, but ultimately found that the combat never came. Lucien is shot during his final speech, by either the player or his companion Reaver, and falls to his death. For a game supposedly all about choice, not allowing gamers their rightful vengeance in Fable II seems markedly unfair.
1) The Bed of Chaos – Dark Souls:
Dark Souls is in many ways a modern day gaming anomaly. Notoriously difficult and unforgiving, Dark Souls manages to punish players over and over again until they learn to take their time, study their surroundings, and learn fight mechanics. Plenty of bosses in the Dark Souls have hampered progress through the game, but each battle can be overcome with practice. The Bed of Chaos, however, is the exception to rule when it comes to Dark Souls bosses. The Bed of Chaos fight forces players to destroy the glowing roots and then the heart the distorted and twisted creature. Unlike the rest of the Dark Souls bosses, fighting the Bed of Chaos requires more luck than anything else. As the beast sweeps his massive arms, the floor gives way, leading to more than one unexpected deaths. In a game where patience and critical thinking are the keys to success, the sudden change of game mechanics feels cruel.
