‘Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak’ Announces Release Date with Trailer

Blackbird Interactive and Borderlands‘ developer Gearbox Software have teamed up to tackle their foray into the Real-Time Strategy (RTS) genre, and the hype train is moving at full speed. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak will be coming January 20, 2016 for PC and Steam.

Originally released in 1999, Homeworld provided a strategic and tactical experience that utilized outer space as its setting. Homeworld 2 came out in 2003 with positive reception, reinforcing the high caliber of quality the IP carries. Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak takes an alternate route by changing up the setting and serves as a prequel to the 90s classic.

You follow Rachel S’jet, a chief science officer for the Coalition of the Northern Kiithid, into the great dunes of the desert Kharak. An anomaly has been discovered in the desert, and delving deep into enemy territory is the only way to protect humanity. Strategic elements of the RTS genre shine here greatly – controlling forces exploring massive environments is only the beginning.

Both games have been made available in 2015 as remastered editions on Steam. If you’re looking to get into the game’s universe before January 20, this is the best way to do it.
