Over the past few months the Star Wars YouTube channel has been releasing footage, clips, and other archival footage from the original trilogy for both new and old fans to enjoy. The latest video they’ve dusted off is the official theatrical trailer for Return of the Jedi as it appeared in 1982.

You’ll immediately notice how far cinema has come over the past 30 years, but with that being said ROTJ still holds up even today, especially if you watch it on DVD or Blu-ray. The trailer itself features the grainy film look we haven’t seen since the advent of DLP technology and digital film. There’s a definite charm to the presentation, although I think I’m quite happy with how modern movies look these days. I guess one positive is the fact that this version of ROTJ hasn’t been bastardized by any Lucas post-edits yet. Oh the horrors, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

Grab your kids or any young Star Wars fan and make them watch the trailer below to see where their favorite galaxy from far, far away came from. Think of it as a geek history lesson. Just don’t let them know you’re crying on the inside thinking about the days before the Star Wars prequels.
