The 2011 video game season started a little slow with a few great games releasing in the early months, but by June the floodgates had been opened.  A multitude of triple-AAA titles were released on the gaming public, and outside of a few slow weeks in the Summer there has been no rest for gamers trying to soak in all of the excellent titles of 2011.  This begs the question, “Is 2011 the best year ever for hardcore gamers?”  I’m inclined to say yes, and here are a few reasons why.

2011 has been the year of the sequel in the video game industry, which has helped to reinforce the idea that this year has been one of the best year’s ever for great video games.  Typically if a game gets a sequel it usually means that the franchise is already wildly popular.  Sh*tty games don’t usually get another chance, so the fact that there are already 10 games from established franchises out this year, I think it’s safe to say that every gamer has had a chance to return to one of their favorite gaming worlds in 2011.  How can this NOT be an excellent year for gamers when mega franchises like Gears of War, inFamous, Battlefield, Modern Warfare, Elder Scrolls, and Uncharted all had a new release in 2011?  Not to mention other time honored franchises like Halo and Assassin’s Creed also getting new (or updated) titles.

This is not the time to be on a budget if you’re a gamer.  I’ve personally been at GameStop for the past 3 weeks in a row picking up new games, and I have to go there again today to buy Skyrim (for that matter next week too for Halo: Anniversary).  Talk about the stresses of being a gamer!  There’s just too many games to play right now, but that reinforces my point that this is the year of the gamer.  When I have to leave games as excellent as Uncharted 3 to play games like MW3 and Skyrim, I’d say that’s a good problem to have.  Although, for someone who considers themselves a quasi-completionist it pains me to not finish games before I pop the next one in, but I can’t sit by and let the rest of you play all of these fantastic 2011 titles without me.  I’ll return to the games I’ve yet to complete, but once again this is proof that there’s just too many must-play games to attempt in the latter half of 2011.

Now don’t take my message the wrong way.  I may b*tch about having too many video games to play (wah! right?), but that’s only an indicator of how the 2011 gaming season has been.  I can’t honestly think of another year where I’ve had over 10 must-play-immediately titles on my video game hit list.  It’s insanity I tell you, but the type of craziness that I enjoy.  With the way this last part of 2011 is shaping up I should have plenty of content to wade through until the 2012 season, which will kick off in my books once Mass Effect 3 is released in March of 2012.  Not only do I still have to beat some recent games like Uncharted 3, MW3, and Skyrim, but I also want to go back and replay some of the top notch games from 2011 such as Batman: Arkham City and Deus Ex: Human Revoltuion.  It ain’t easy being a dedicated gamer folks!

With all of the triple-A titles released in 2011, and some still to be released, I can say without a doubt that this has been the best year in gaming that I’ve ever experienced.  I’ve been able to play some excellent new franchises like Bulletstorm and Deus Ex, as well as returning to some classics such as Gears of War 3 and MW3.  When it’s all said and done I don’t know if 2011 can ever be topped in regards to the release of excellent video games.  So what about you?  Do you also feel like 2011 has been the greatest gaming year of your geeky life?  Let us know using the comment section below.  For further proof that 2011 has been the best ever I’ve included some of the blockbuster titles that have been released since last January below.  You’ve been needing a clone to get through all of these frakking video games…
