James Gunn Returning to Direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Yesterday it was revealed that James Gunn was rehired by Disney to direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which he was fired from last June when an alt-right personality drudged up a bunch of old distasteful tweets from the Director.
Disney had known about Gunn’s provocative past and tweets before they hired him for his MCU work, but thanks to how volatile the political climate is these days, they powers at be caved to the alt-right and terminated Gunn’s contract after the tweets resurfaced. It was an unfortunate situation all around, and Gunn was always accepting of his fate and never blamed anyone but himself, so I’m glad the universe worked things out, and he’s back in charge of Guardians 3. I never thought anyone else could take on the job and do the franchise justice, plus all of Gunn’s peers publicly turned down the job in a show of support for Gunn, so Disney had no real choice in the matter.
At this time Gunn is working on a new iteration in the Suicide Squad franchise, so he probably won’t start getting back to work on Guardians for a few more months. The film had already been pushed back in Disney’s MCU schedule, so it’ll have a to wait a bit longer for its creator to return.
