James Gunn Reveals What Groot Says At The End of ‘Infinity War’ and Its Heavy

Spoilers for Avengers: Infinity War, proceed with caution!

If you’ve seen Avengers: Infinity War by now, then you’re well aware of its highly emotional ending. Hell, most of its narrative is highly emotional, but the third act in particular gets pretty rough for MCU fans who have loyally watched all of the featured characters get fleshed out over the 18 films that released before it. Fan favorite characters literally begin to disappear, and while Gamora’s death was way more visceral in nature, seeing the likes of Black Panther, Bucky, Peter Parker, Teen Groot, and the other heroes who faded away thanks to Thanos’ snap, are also tough to watch.

Well, thanks to James Gunn, who is the caretaker of the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, one of these fade away deaths is even more tragic than how it played out on screen, which is due in part to the scene needing translated. According to Gunn, as Groot begins to fade away and says, “I Am Groot” to Rocket, it actually translates to “Dad” in this case. So yeah, that’s some heavy shit, and it makes complete sense for the character as it relates to his bond with Rocket. After all, it’s Rocket who tended to Baby Groot the moment he arrived, so it makes perfect sense that Teen Groot would consider Rocket his Father. Damn, Gunn just made the ending of Infinity War even more heavy than it already was. You can check out the tweet chain below from Gunn.
