The first trailer for the acclaimed director’s next film–titled Split–has been released, and it’s two-and-a-half minutes of creepy terror. James McAvoy stars as a man with over 20 personalities within one brain who deems it necessary to abduct and imprison three teenage girls. It’s a nightmare of physical and emotional proportions.
While the trailer feels like it gives a lot of the movie away (as most trailers seem to do nowadays), this is still Shyamalan we’re talking about. Remember the first time you watched Sixth Sense? Or when you realized what time period The Village was actually taking place in? He had a knack for hitting the plot twist sweet spot. Granted, Shyamalan’s run of films since then have mostly been lackluster (though 2015’s The Visit garnished mostly positive reviews), perhaps he’s finding his way again with Split. Preying on fears of abduction and the uncertain stability of one with multiple personalities, Shyamalan may be resorting back to the story-telling ways that led him to Hollywood prominence.
Check out the trailer above, and keep an eye out for Split when it hits theaters early next year.
