John Boyega Teases That Rey and Finn Will Team Up Again In Star Wars: Episode IX Based On a Ridley Tweet
While at Wonder Con this past weekend John Boyega, who plays Finn in the new Star Wars trilogy, revealed that his character and Daisy Ridley’s Rey will not be separated in Star Wars: Episode IX. In The Last Jedi, the two besties only shared a brief exchange on screen towards the end of the film, which was much different from their adventure in The Force Awakens. It seems in Episode IX though, that the two space buds will be reunited and will team up again for whatever adventures that film may feature.
Boyega shed some light on the situation between Rey and Finn in Episode IX by saying:
“I haven’t read the script for Episode 9. But Daisy did shoot me a text saying, “Oh my gosh, I just heard from J.J. [Abrams], and we’re back together. That’s what I’m really excited about, is Finn and Rey back together again.”
Hopefully he doesn’t get Daisy in trouble for sharing her excitement over the prospect of them teaming up again, but if this is true Finn and Rey fans should be happy. I did miss their dynamic in The Last Jedi, so I’m all for seeing these two heroes team up again after learning new life lessons on their own and with other characters in The Last Jedi.
John shared a few other insights, but they’re mostly his own speculation, so treat them as that. He explained that while Rey and Finn may team up again, things won’t be easy for them and the new Rebellion. Boyega said, “I think it’s going to be all-out war in this final chapter, so we need to be prepared.” I mean that makes complete sense considering the end of The Last Jedi, so I wouldn’t say he’s making a bold plot prediction.
Boyega also wants to learn more about Finn himself, and his motivations for defecting in the first place. He’s hoping to get some of this backstory in Episode IX, but that will all depend on J.J.’s script, which Boyega hasn’t read yet. Boyega explained, “One question I’ve always had as an actor being involved in Star Wars is why Finn decided to defect in the first place. I still don’t understand. I would love to know more, to go into his life as a Stormtrooper.” I can’t disagree with his thoughts, and I’d love some deeper insights on Finn too, but I just don’t think we will get them in Episode IX. These stories are better kept for comic book runs or books, so Finn fanboys probably shouldn’t get their hopes up for a Finn-centric character study on film anytime soon.
Star Wars: Episode IX hits theaters on December 20, 2019.
