Johnson’s Star Wars Trilogy Will Not Be Set During the Old Republic

A few weeks ago Lucasfilm and Disney revealed that Rian Johnson, the Director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, would be creating a brand new Star Wars trilogy that would feature new characters and locations. The only concrete information about what this trilogy would be about is that it wouldn’t be about the Skywalkers.

That’s all we knew, so like Star Wars fans do, we all took to the Internet and social media to speculate on which time period this new trilogy may be set. Many fans, including myself and my Star Wars Time co-host Nick, thought that the Old Republic era — first detailed in Knights of the Old Republic video game — would make a great time period for the trilogy. We also felt that the time period between Jedi and TFA would make a great fit for Johnson’s trilogy, but after a recent interview, it sounds like at least one time period has been ruled out by Johnson himself.

In a recent interview with Mashable, Rian Johnson described that he’s aware of the Old Republic and loved the games set in that era, but that he wants his trilogy to tackle something completely new. He told Mashable when talking about Star Wars fan, “Oh, they love Knights of the Old Republic. I played that game when it first came out and it was like, god, I loved it. Yeah, that’s a fantastic game. And I understand it, the instinct to automatically go to something that you know and love, that you’ve already seen.”

While he may appreciate the video game and the love fans have for it, Johnson still wants to create something brand new. He told Mashable, “What’s really fun is the notion of what new stuff are we gonna see, what new stories can we tell?” If you take the initial press release about this trilogy verbatim, which read, “introduce new characters from a corner of the galaxy that Star Wars lore has never before explored,” then I guess the whole Old Republic setting discussion is mute, but there are loopholes in that theory now that the Old Republic stories have been labeled as legends versus canon these days. Either way, it sounds like Rian is dead set on providing a trilogy that will feature previously unexplored Star Wars territory, so if that’s the case the Old Republic setting is off the board.

Feel free to chime in below with your own thoughts on what you’d like to see in this new Star Wars trilogy.
