Sometimes, it can be hard to remember that life’s only constant is change. The video game world has been given an unfortunate reminder of this harsh fact today, as Ken Levine of Irrational Games announced that the highly respected developer will be closing its doors.
In a heartfelt and informative message, Levine addressed the gaming masses as to his decision to shut down Irrational Games as he begins his next venture in the video game world.
Irrational Games has consistently been lauded for their ability to create immersive and memorable games filled with beautiful visuals and impressive writing.
Best known for the BioShock franchise, Irrational Games has been dedicated to making the best possible video game experiences since the company’s founding in 1997.
Levine’s message continues on, stating that while his time at Irrational Games has been the best job he has had; the time has come for the storied developer to shift his focus elsewhere. In doing this, Levine is effectively shutting down Irrational Games and taking a mere fifteen employees to start a smaller studio that “make narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable. To foster the most direct relationship with our fans possible, we will focus exclusively on content delivered digitally.”
Of course, it is an undeniable shame to see one of the video game industry’s most respected studios shut down, but Levine’s decision to take his talents to a new stage cannot help but leave one with hope.
More information regarding the unfortunate closure of Irrational Games, as well as Ken Levine’s full message can be found on the studio’s website.
Thank you, Irrational Games, for all that you have done to make our beloved video game industry all the brighter.
“Making you a better geek, one post at a time!”
