Pen and paper RPG fans can trade their dice in for a keyboard and mouse this June, as Paradox Interactive has set the 18th as the release date for the wildly entertaining Knights of Pen and Paper +1 Edition.
Equal parts a spoof as well as a love letter to tabletop gaming culture, Knights of Pen and Paper was originally released on iOS and Android markets, where it struck a chord with many gamers thanks to its hilarious wit and high replayability.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1takes a sort-of meta approach to traditional role-playing games. Players create a party of people who are playing an RPG, as well as a Game Master. These characters are all your average-Joe types and while they may seem fairly mundane, spending time together leveling up allows them to grow into full-on fantasy archetypes. The Game Master in Knights serves as the narrator on the party’s adventure and adds both hilarity and challenge throughout the course of a session.
Knights of Pen and Paper +1 isn’t afraid to be a little offbeat. The game’s dialogue and characters operate at a ‘nothing is sacred’ level. Enemy encounters often hinge on borderline parody and the party’s ‘real life’ outfits will draw familiarity from anyone with interest or knowledge in nerd and gaming culture. While some games attempt a level of satire and humor that simply winds up feeling left of center, Knights delivers all of its humor at a pitch-perfect level, and every joke lands a critical hit.
At a bargain price of $9.99, Knights of Pen and Paper +1 is certainly worth checking out for those who want a game that feels very much like a traditional role-playing experience.
