Today Konami announced their newest installment in the Metal Gear franchise: an alternate universe zombie apocalypse. Wait, what? Many Metal Gear fans are perplexed and even suspicious about the implications of a Metal Gear game in the same vein as Left 4 Dead. The trailer introduces us to a nameless Militaires Sans Frontières soldier who was left behind on Big Boss’ Mother Base during the attack by the Skulls that took place in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes, the prelude to The Phantom Pain. During the attack, this MSF soldier is sucked into a wormhole along with the entirety of Mother Base and teleported to a barren desert filled with Skull-esque zombies with crystals coming out of their heads. Konami has not officially divulged any story details, but this trailer has certainly gotten fans of the franchise talking.
While some fans are upset about the divergence from the typical stealth genre that Metal Gear typically resides in, fans need only look to Platinum Games’ spinoff Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to see that a non-stealth Metal Gear game can be amazing. However, that is not the only aspect of this trailer that makes some fans hesitant. Due to questionable practices by Konami during the development of The Phantom Pain, longtime director Hideo Kojima ultimately left the company in order to start his new re-branded Kojima productions. Fans loyal to Kojima are questioning whether or not they want to support a new Metal Gear game without Kojima at the helm. That being said, we will be following this story closely to see what Metal Gear Survive has in store for us players.
