There can never be enough good Metroidvania games, and Mable & The Wood looks pretty unique so far. The main character, the titular Mable can’t fight very well on her own, and is too weak to lift her heavy sword. She can, however, shapeshift into various creatures that she deals with throughout the game, including bosses. She can only do this for a limited time, but if she defeats enemies while she’s in a different form, it extends the time she’s in that form.

This is a fairly unique take on the genre, as usually, these types of games rely on you getting more and more strong and agile through the game. It’s cool to see your abilities rely completely on the enemies you’ve chosen to fight throughout the game. Not only that, but there are less-lethal ways to deal with enemies, and you can actually choose not to kill any enemies. This extends to bosses as well, there are secret paths that you can find to get around enemies.

This sounds pretty cool, but I hope that the only good ending isn’t from not fighting anything. I’d be a little miffed if they gave me a cool, unique combat system that I’m not allowed to use if I want the best ending or 100% completion. Check out the trailer above and let us know what you think of the ideas behind the game!
