If you’ve been staying on top of promotions for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, then you may have felt a few of the more recent ones may have cast Luke Skywalker as someone flirting with the Dark Side of the Force. Well, Mark Hamill has something to say about this theory in a recent interview with Disney Rewards Insider titled “40 Years of Heroism”. Before proceeding with his quote I would like to point out that the information may be slightly SPOILERISH, so proceed at your own risk.
Anyway, in the interview Hamill had the following to say:
“In ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens,’ Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices,” said Hamill. “It haunts him to the core. But he hasn’t gone to the dark side. This isn’t an evil version of him. But it’s still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It’s a real challenge.”
I’d say that is a pretty clear statement on Luke’s place in the Force in The Last Jedi, and that he isn’t a Dark Side user. Rather he’s someone who has lost confidence in himself for making the right decisions in regards to the Force and how it can be used for good. Having your Force sensitive nephew kill all of your apprentices and then become the galaxy’s new hitman number one has that affect on people I guess.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi hits theaters on December 15, 2017.
