Of all places, ABC’s The View gets to release the exclusive scoop that there will be a new Thor this fall and it will be a woman. Though no word as to who will be the new God of Thunder, current Thor writer Jason Aaron stated in the follow-up press release that
“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before.”
This is the second recent shake-up to the Marvel top tier characters, as Steve Rogers will be replaced as Captain America in upcoming issues of the eponymous title. This change to the Thor character was hinted at from the teased upcoming cover for the Avengers’ “Time Runs Out” story that features someone else as Cap but also features current Thor wielding the mighty battle axe Jarnbjorn instead of his usual hammer. The follow-up release also clearly states that this switch is going to be permanent. Other characters such as Beta Ray Bill and Captain America have wielded the mighty hammer before but only temporarily.
The story on Newsarama cites the portion of the press release that says this is “a brand new female hero” as evidence that this means the new Thor will not be the recently revealed sister of the current Thor, Angela. The new series, written by Jason Aaron with art by Russell Dauterman, will take the place of Thor: God of Thunder which will end in September.
