Marvel Finally Reveals Why C-3PO Has a Red Arm in ‘Force Awakens’

This contains spoilers for Star Wars: C-3PO #1

Fans of Star Wars: The Force Awakens undoubtedly noticed C-3PO’s red arm, and the mystery remained in question until yesterday. In Marvel’s one-shot C-3PO comic, the protocol droid is escorting OMRI, a droid serving the First Order, who has the location of abducted Resistance leader Admiral Ackbar. During their journey to meet the Resistance, 3PO, OMRI, and the other droids in their party are met with inhospitable opposition, including a tentacled creature that tears off 3PO’s arm.

After his droid pals fall off one by one, 3PO and OMRI develop a kinship through dialog about who they’re programmed to serve. As acidic rain begins to fall and turn OMRI’s metallic shine to a red primer, OMRI gives 3PO Ackbar’s location and sacrifices himself to save the golden droid. 3PO saves OMRI’s arm as Poe Dameron and BB-8 come to his rescue, replacing his missing limb while reminding him of the droids that were lost along the way.
