If you live in reality and don’t pay much attention to geeky movie announcements, you probably missed the massive fanboy backlash last week when Michael Bay announced that his Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot would feature aliens. In his version, which has been backed by the original creators, the turtles will be aliens and not mutated pets. This revelation really bent some long time fans out of shape, and there’s already a Michael Bay “raped my childhood” campaign going around just like the one launched by Star Wars fans against Lucas.
I for one don’t really care if the turtles are aliens or not, because I have other things to worry about in life, but I do sort of understand why the TMNT fans are going ape sh*t right now. Fans of geek culture usually take debates like this to the extreme, but it’s only because they treasure these fantasy based properties more than life itself. If they want to spend their waking hours bitching and moaning on forums about turtles who are also ninjas, then more power to them! I just wonder what these folks do with the rest of their time? I hope they exhibit this same fervor for their jobs and taking care of their families.
Bay has come out of hiding and defended his Ninja Turtles decisions in a statement on his official forums. He basically said, “Chill out fanboys I got this!” He may be known as an a-hole, but I still think he’ll do the TMNT franchise justice on the big screen. At least he’s not directing right? If you’re interested in reading Bay’s statement you can head on down past the break, or you could meander down even further to see an example of how fanboys are taking this Ninja Turtles movie announcement. You’ve realized that fanboys are never truly happy with anything…
Bay’s Statement from his forums
“Paramount marketing changed the name. They made the title simple. The characters you all remember are exactly the same, and yes they still act like teenagers. Everything you remember, why you liked the characters, is in the movie. This script is being developed by two very smart writers, with one of the original creators of Ninja Turtles. They care VERY MUCH about making this film for the fans. Everyone on this team cares about the fans. Just give them a chance. Jonathan the director, is a major fan of the whole franchise. HE’S NOT GOING TO LET YOU DOWN.
