Well, I promised a slightly different (and more informative) format for the weekly comics roundup and here it is!

Usually the first few paragraphs I would make some anecdotal observations then riff on the top books coming out this week. Unfortunately, I found myself mostly mentioning the big companies like DC, Marvel, Image, etc. and leaving out the smaller publishers when sounding off on the new books for the week.

To remedy that, I’ll still have the highlights, but after the opening anecdote, a short paragraph about any big announcements or books, now I will have the complete list of books dropping for New Comic Book Day! Every book scheduled for release will be listed (alphabetical by publisher) to help make you a better informed comic geek, one post at a time!

Without further ado, there are some notes to…note. This is the last regular week for DC until June. Marvel also adds another notch to their original graphic novel series (see first highlight). Plus the three weekly DC books (Batman Eternal, New 52 Futures End, and Earth 2 Worlds End) all wrap up this week. And for those who have been on the hook for some of those it’s a bit of a relief. I’m all for a weekly book, but three is too many. Two too many. Word play!

Avengers: Rage of Ultron OGN (Marvel)

Writer: Rick Remender, Artist: Jerome Opeña, $24.99
Writer: Rick Remender, Artist: Jerome Opeña, $24.99

Another entry in the list of Marvel’s new original graphic novel line, this story features an all-star creative team of Rick Remender (Uncanny Avengers, All-New Captain America, AXIS) and Jerome Opeña (Punisher, Uncanny X-Force, Avengers) linking up to tell a tale featuring mostly the movie Avengers as they take on Planet Ultron. Planet. Ultron. Oddly, there won’t be an actual “Avengers” comic being published when Avengers: Age of Ultron hits theaters, so this is pretty much the only fix available, albeit for the OGN price of $24.99 for 100+ pages of action.

Convergence #0 (DC)

Writers: Dan Jurgens + Jeff King, Artist: Ethan Van Sciver, $4.99

The two month “fill-in” event starts now. This is the only book releasing this week before the tidal wave of tie-ins (plus the weekly core series book) begins next week. For fans of the older universes from DC’s past, this will surely strike a nostalgic chord with you as the pre-Crisis on Infinite Earths, pre-Zero Hour, and pre-New 52 universes are back in play. This is also the first credit in comics for writer Jeff King, better known for his TV credits on Continuum and White Collar.

Uncanny Inhumans #0 (Marvel)

Writer: Charles Soule, Artist: Steve McNiven, $4.99
Writer: Charles Soule, Artist: Steve McNiven, $4.99

Marvel continues the hard sell for the Inhumans as they, as usual, cancel a book only to re-launch it. Uncanny Inhumans will not be ending when Secret Wars takes over, plus it’s written by Charles Soule (everything) and drawn by Steve McNiven (Civil War, Death of Wolverine) so that alone is worth the price of admission (Charles Soule wrote the last volume of Inhuman and Death of Wolverine).

Batman Eternal #52 (DC)

Writers: Scott Snyder + Various, Artist: Paulo Siqueira, $3.99
Writers: Scott Snyder + Various, Artist: Paulo Siqueira, $3.99

We’ve finally reached the finish line! I know DC has done a weekly title before, but this cycle was insane as DC was printing THREE weekly titles at the same time, plus Marvel chipped in with their terrible Wolverines weekly book. While it certainly had its own share of ebbs and flows, Batman Eternal was still a great adventure and featured tons of DC’s top creative. The last few issues had big reveals and lots of surprises, so could this final installment (which is $3.99) have any more fireworks?

Kanan the Last Padawan #1 (Marvel)

Writer: Greg Weisman, Artist: Pepe Larraz, $3.99
Writer: Greg Weisman, Artist: Pepe Larraz, $3.99

Kanan is a main player in Star Wars Rebels but he was originally a Padawan named Caleb Durne. He was able to escape when all of the other Jedi were executed, but how did he manage that? This first arc centers on the time between The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels and features Writer Greg Weisman (writer/executive producer on Star Wars Rebels) and artist Pepe Larraz (Deadpool vs. X-Force, X-Force, Inhuman).
