This week’s choices for new comics are interesting. DC and Marvel don’t really have anything that is a must-have, maybe you could count this week’s entry for “Black Vortex”. But still, it’s a down week. Some great reads from the other publishers though.

DC’s lineup is almost completely Convergence, which is unfortunate because the core series and tie-ins aren’t good. This week’s Convergence lineup of tie-ins is drawing from the Zero Hour universe, and if I had to be excited about one, I’d probably pick the Convergence: Superman – Man of Steel book since it’s written by original Man of Steel writer Louise Simonson. If you really wanted to, you could pick up the core series just to get the general idea of this poorly executed battle royale, and maybe if you’re a hardcore DC fan you can pick up some of the interesting tie-ins. Overall, though, I’d look elsewhere for some reads, maybe some DC/Vertigo books like Kitchen #6 and American Vampire Second Cycle #7, until this event ends or gets better (whichever is first). Convergence is basically the same thing as Marvel’s Secret Wars, so hopefully that one will be better.

Speaking of the House of Ideas, this week is kind of bland for them, too. The “Black Vortex” event is almost over and the Avengers time-hopping story in Avengers Millennium #3 is…what it is. Otherwise this week, it’s probably between Thor #7, Superior Iron Man #7, Uncanny X-Men #33, or Nova #29.

Outside of the big two is where there are plenty of choices. Dark Horse kicks off the weird crossover of Archie vs. Predator #1, which is billed as a something like The Most Dangerous Game. Quentin Tarantino has another issue of Django Zorro #6 from Dynamite Entertainment, which is an interesting story from Tarantino and one of his characters. IDW has some cool license-based books with G.I. Joe: Snake Eyes – Agent of Cobra #4, Star Trek #44, Transformers #40, and X-Files Season 10 #23. Image has some very exciting books with Mark Millar’s Chrononauts #2, the long-awaited Fade Out #5, lots happening in Revival #29, and Tithe #1 from Matt Hawkins.

Archie vs. Predator #1 (Dark Horse)

Writer: Alex De Campi, Artist: Rich Koslowski, $3.99

There goes the neighborhood! Things are all fun and games for the Riverdale gang on their Spring Break in Costa Rica until things turn into The Most Dangerous Game. There is a reason that the trophy-collecting Predator wants them, but can the kids figure it out before they all get collected?

Thor #7 (Marvel)

Writer: Jason Aaron, Artist: Russell Dauterman, $3.99
Writer: Jason Aaron, Artist: Russell Dauterman, $3.99

The disgraced Odinson still doesn’t have his mighty hammer, Mjolnir, and that is really starting to piss off Odin. Enter: the Destroyer!

Sabrina #2 (Archie)

Writer: Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, Artists: Robert Hack + Rachel Deering, $3.99
Writer: Roberto Aguirre Sacasa, Artists: Robert Hack + Rachel Deering, $3.99

This is definitely not the typical Sabrina the teenage witch series. More akin to the Afterlife with Archie series, Sabrina’s boyfriend, Harvey, clearly has some occult business going on. With the Council of Witches offering no help, Sabrina needs to call on a dark entity to figure things out.

Revival #29 (Image)

Writer: Tim Seeley. Artist: Mike Norton, $3.99
Writer: Tim Seeley. Artist: Mike Norton, $3.99

The world of Revival has always been one with a lot of action and conflict but also one shrouded in mystery. Exactly why did the dead return to life? Many of those mysteries, like the town’s reanimated deceased, are about to be unearthed.

Legendary Star-Lord #11 (Marvel)

Writer: Sam Humphries, Artist: Paco Medina, $3.99
Writer: Sam Humphries, Artist: Paco Medina, $3.99

The penultimate issue of the “Black Vortex” jamboree sees the Guardians and the X-Men in quite a jam, with perhaps the only solution being to submit to the all-powerful Black Vortex.
