June kicks off with a big bang. DC launches their new “DC You” branding, Marvel carries forward with Secret Wars AND three Star Wars titles this week, plus the indies have some heavies this week like the last issue of Archie and a monumental issue for G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero.

The New 52 is no more, it has ceased to be. In its stead is the DC You brand, which promises more options and more diversity across the DC publishing lineup. Largely, this first week is made up of DC’s publishing pillars returning after the hiatus, like Action Comics #41, Green Lantern #41, and Wonder Woman Annual #1. There are still some notable debuts, such as the start of the Bat-Mite #1 and Bizarro #1 limited series, plus the first issue of Batman Beyond #1 and Midnighter #1.

If you have at least a cursory knowledge of Marvel’s publishing past, then this week of Secret Wars tie-ins is for you! Returning to print are classics like Armor Wars #1, Future Imperfect #1, and X-Tinction Agenda #1 to help weave the tapestry of Battleworld. For those who aren’t as well versed (Spider-Versed?), the main Secret Wars book is still a really entertaining read. Otherwise, Marvel has THREE Star Wars books, the eponymous Star Wars #6, Darth Vader #6, and Princess Leia #4 (of 5) as well as a new Superior Iron Man #9 and the last issue of the weekly series Wolverines #20 (good riddance!).

A hugely monumental issue of Archie #666 caps off the publishing run of over 70 years for Riverdale’s most famous teen. Archie Comics is closing the book on this classic in lieu of a more modern perspective when they reboot the Archie lineup later this year (ostensibly). The “Worlds Unite” mega-arc also marches forward this week in Sonic Boom #8. Dynamite Entertainment has the action-packed Swords of Sorrow #2, which features tons of top talent and tons of classic characters.

Justice League #41 (DC)

Writer: Geoff Johns, Artist: Jason Fabok, $4.99

So if you didn’t read Convergence #8 last week, then SPOILER the original Crisis on Infinite Earths didn’t happen the way it did and the multiverse never contracted into one universe (or so it goes now). Anyway, with Justice League beginning the highly anticipated “Darkseid War” with this issue, it’ll be interesting to see how the Anti-Monitor fits into this “new” landscape. It’s also going to be a great story from Johns, complemented well by art from Jason Fabok.

Archie #666 (Archie)

Writer: Tom DeFalco, Artist: Dan Parent, $3.99

A strange place to end, but nevertheless Archie is capping off its run at issue #666, ending a publication run that began in 1942. Riverdale’s most famous teenager will reboot later, but this over-sized last issue flaunts an all-star creative team including Tom DeFalco and heralded Archie writer, Dan Parent.

Amazing Spider-Man: Renew Your Vows #1 (Marvel)

Writer: Dan Slott, Artist: Adam Kubert, $3.99

It’s being called “the last Spider-Man story” (i.e. think Dark Knight Returns…sort of). Peter lives in a world where he is still married to MJ and they actually had their daughter, May. Peter walked away from being Spider-Man before at the request of his family, and readers are finally treated to a world without “One More Day”. However, this IS a Secret Wars tie-in (how tied-in it is remains to be seen) so this could get real sad real quick.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #214 (IDW)

Writer: Larry Hama, Artist: S. L. Gallant, $3.99

I’ll admit that I don’t regularly read G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, but I did see that it is already sold out for some comic retailers. IDW is about to take another of our classic childhood characters and…well, you’ll see (if you can find it).

Secret Wars #3 (Marvel)

Writer: Jonathan Hickman, Artist: Esad Ribic, $3.99

The first two issues firmly established all the Battle-world building, so where does the action go starting with issue 3? The Cabal is clearly a team out of place on Battleworld, and they know it. The rest of the inhabitants are slowly piecing together that not everything is as it seems. Will the Thor corps be able to retain the peace?
