Last week was ripe with selections off the beaten path and was a great chance to try out some new material. This week it’s back to basics for the last time in 2014, though for this first week of December most publishers are moderately light.

DC has the most to offer with Action Comics #37, Aquaman and the Others #8, Gotham Academy #3, Swamp Thing #37, plus a double dose of “Godhead” with Sinestro #7 and Green Lantern #37.

Marvel has only a few notables before they drop the hammer next week. This time around they have All-New X-Factor #17, AXIS Revolutions #3, Deadpool #38, Guardians 3000 #3, Hulk #9, Inhuman #9, and Legendary Star-Lord #6. For an added bonus they have Captain America Peggy Carter Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. which reprints classic Cap stories featuring Peggy Carter.

Image features Chew #45, Low #5, and Nailbiter #8. Also of note are a few additions to their Image Firsts books that reprint previous #1’s for $1, providing a great chance to get caught up on some of their popular works. Three books get added to that list this week with Invincible, Outcast By Kirkman & Azaceta, and Wicked + The Divine.

Secret Six #1 (DC)

Writer: Gail Simone, Artist: Ken Lashley, $2.99
Writer: Gail Simone, Artist: Ken Lashley, $2.99

Gail Simone brings her acclaimed squad of super-villains into the New 52. Catman, Scandal, Deadshot, Rag Doll, and Black Alice are all here. After Simone’s great run on Batgirl, this newest volume of Secret Six begins with all of these characters locked in a room with no reasons and no answers. The Secret Six have to solve the secret as to what makes them the Secret Six.

Birthright #3 (Image)

Writer: Joshua Williamson, Artists: Andrei Bressan + Adriano Lucas, $2.99
Writer: Joshua Williamson, Artists: Andrei Bressan + Adriano Lucas, $2.99

The great thing about Image books, is that to get caught up with a series like Birthright you only have to read two previous issues. A boy gets kidnapped into another dimension and comes back a seasoned warrior. Sold!

Thanos vs. Hulk #1 (Marvel)

Writer: Jim Starlin, Artist: Jim Starlin, $3.99
Writer: Jim Starlin, Artist: Jim Starlin, $3.99

Well…who WOULD win? Time to find out! Oh, and it’s done by Jim Starlin (Infinity Gauntlet, Infinity War)!

Angela Asgard’s Assassin #1 (Marvel)

Writers: Kieron Gillen + Marguerite Bennett, Artists: Phil Jimenez + Stephanie Hans, $3.99
Writers: Kieron Gillen + Marguerite Bennett, Artists: Phil Jimenez + Stephanie Hans, $3.99

Marvel’s newest ass-kicking leading female begins her own series. It begins with a battle between Asgard and Heven because Angela possesses something they want. What might Thor’s sister be so worthy to possess (hint: I don’t think it’s Mjolnir)?

Detective Comics #37 (DC)

Writers: Francis Manapul + Brian Buccellato, Artist: Francis Manapul, $3.99
Writers: Francis Manapul + Brian Buccellato, Artist: Francis Manapul, $3.99

Franics Manapul and Brian Buccelatto return to Detective as Batman tries to restore order within chaos. The solicitation hints that it’s “anarky now!” Playful jab at Marvel NOW?

“Making you a better geek, one post at a time!”
