New Details About Finn’s Motivations in ‘The Last Jedi’ Revealed
In the second part of EW’s exclusive coverage of Star Wars: The Last Jedi stars John Boyega and Kellie Marie Tran discuss the motivations of their characters in the film. And, you may be surprised by what Finn is feeling.
According to Boyega, “It got really real for him, and he just wants to get away and not be involved. His intention in the first place was to go to the Outer Rim. He was always brought back [in The Force Awakens,], but this is his chance to get away and perhaps find Rey and go off together. He’s trying to do that at first.”
I’m kind of surprised by this reveal, but again his ties have been to Rey and freeing himself of his past, so I guess the fact that he’s not to keen on sticking with the Resistance isn’t that shocking. I just figured he’d be full of piss and vinegar and ready to get back to the fight after he was gravely wounded by Ren’s blade.
While Finn is feeling down in the dumps and looking for a way out of the Resistance, his legend has spread amongst its member, most notably this film’s new lead, Rose Tico, who is played by Kellie Marie Tran. Thanks to Finn’s exploits in The Force Awakens he has become someone for people like Rose to look up to. “When Rose first meets Finn, that’s how she views him,” Tran says. “He is ‘a big deal.’”
It’s this adoration for Finn that keeps him with the Resistance, and eventually sees the two working together on an important mission. It appears that the unassuming mechanic will soon be weaving her own legend, and her prodding of Finn will surely lead them both on an epic journey that will include a mission on the casino planet, Canto Bight.
Sometimes a nobody can be a hero too, and that looks like where Rose’s narrative is headed, so I’m definitely interested to see where these two characters end up by the time The Last Jedi wraps.
