New Music Monday-ish: Week of October 27th, 2014

The Flaming Lips – With a Little Help from My Fwends

The Flaming Lips return with a re-invented take on one of the greatest album’s of all time in Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart’s Club Band. It’s not a surprise that Wayne Coyne is taking on the psychedelic Beatles album given his preference for recreational hallucinogenics. It may be tough for a die-hard Beatles fan to get through, but the Lips make the songs their own with help from their fwends.

Taylor Swift – 1989

The country-turned-pop-star has a new album out this week, and there’s no reason it won’t hit number one on the charts. The first single “Shake It Off” (above) is either loved or hated. If you’re like a certain writer for this site, you might have danced your face off to this song at a friend’s wedding without hesitation. Swift is so popular, that eight seconds of white noise was accidentally made available on iTunes in Canada and hit number one. Seriously. Haters gonna hate hate hate hate hate…

Rancid – …Honor Is All We Know

The Berkely boys are back with their first album since 2009’s Let the Dominoes Fall. Rancid is credited with perpetuating the punk rock scene in the United States, along with bands like Green Day, NOFX, Bad Religion, and Social Distortion throughout the 80s and 90s. The band is still rocking and puts out a solid effort with …Honor Is All We Know. My pick of the week.

The Who – The Who Hits 50!

This two-disc compilation album from the British rockers has a bunch of rarities, covers, and one new song (above). The album release coincides with a tour, and the above song is expected to be on a brand-new album proposed for 2015. These guys can still rock and are showing no signs of slowing down.

Take some time to listen to some new music; you just might find your new favorite band.
