New Video Game Releases for the Week of 8-19-18

I sure hope you’re in the mood for more randomly generated, sidescrolling action games (really trying to avoid that “m-word“). Guacamelee! 2 stands out among the crowd, thankfully ditching the often bleak, spooky tension and leaning into the more jovial atmosphere established by its predecessor. If you’re truly sick of the genre right now, however, there’s bound to be some new game coming out this week that’ll tickle your fancies — unassuming as they may seem.

Little Dragons Cafe drops this Friday, straight from the mind of Yasuhiro Wada, the creator behind the original Harvest Moon. You’ll be able to manage your own cafe while exploring the world and raising your very own dragon, so, you know — that’s about all the premise I need. Super Life of a Pixel seems oddly alluring, as well, as the platformer transforms through multiple incarnations of old-school pixel art as you play. You really have to see it in action to grasp its multi-faceted art direction:

Do you like platformers without…plat…forms? Check out The King’s Bird. Platforms are there, for sure, but you’ll be spending most of your time flying around them. And, for those looking to create dubstep-esque songs in virtual reality, good news: Track Lab comes out this week.

If none of these light up your eyes, you may have to look at older games being ported to various consoles for a new experience this week. Burnout Paradise Remastered comes to PC, Slime Rancher hits PS4, Gone Home finds its way onto the Switch, and Shenmue 1 and 2 both land on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Oh, and if you haven’t been able to get Hollow Knight out of your mind, you might want to take a gander at Godmaster, the game’s final free content pack.

As always, everything is for PC unless stated otherwise, and the bold titles are the games that have piqued my interest.

The author Zachery Bennett

Zach’s eternal preoccupation with video games became cemented at an early age. His first memorable journey away from reality began with a text-based Football game on a dirty Apple II; he’s chased fantasy ever since. Having took English classes as electives in college, Zach decided to pull the trigger on a merger between the two obsessions.
