Nintendo held a secret press conference late last night to unveil their newest handheld the 3DS XL. The XL’s screens are 90% larger than the original 3DS’, but that’s about the only difference. It still doesn’t have a second analog stick, and the internals don’t seem to be any different either. The only other major difference is that the three buttons under the second screen seem to be more of a traditional button than the sunk-in ones on the original.
My reaction to this news is minimal. I somehow missed the boat on the presser itself, which should go to show you how closely I pay attention to Nintendo these days, so the news of their new handheld doesn’t get me excited whatsoever. Does anyone outside of Japan, or families who like to game together even care about Nintendo products anymore? I think they proved at this year’s E3 that they’ve given up on the hardcore gamer that oh so wanted to be in love with them again, but I truly think the company has permanently moved away from the fans they garnered at such a young age with the NES.
The 3DS XL is bigger and that’s about it
Don’t get me wrong, I’ll always have a soft spot for Nintendo in my heart, because they are the company that truly started the gaming console revolution back in the 80’s. I, like many gamers in their late 20’s and 30’s, was introduced to the joys of the medium with the NES, and it wholeheartedly captured my imagination. Nintendo more or less set me on my video game loving path from day 1, so I’ll always respect them for that. With that being said though, they’ve pretty much dropped the ball with everything they’ve done post the Nintendo 64.
At this point in time I’ve become so jaded with Nintendo that I just don’t have the energy to care about their products anymore. Maybe the Wii U will change everything for me, but after spending some hands-on time with it at E3, its gimmicky controller and less than impressive graphical powers haven’t swayed me yet. Not even Super Mario himself can save me from my Nintendo depression now.
Oh I forgot that it has a few new colors too..woot?
So what do the rest of you think? Does the 3DS XL make you feel all gushy inside, or do you care about it as much as Bruce Banner likes getting angry? Let us know using the comments section below. You’ve been bored by Nintendo yet again…
