Nintendo Released a New Smartphone App That You Can’t Use

Nintendo has entered the crowded fray of social media apps with it’s newly released Miitomo. The app allows users to create customizable cartoon avatars called Miis, like the ones with the Wii console ten years ago. Users can post updates and comment or like others’ posts as a way to talk to others individually as opposed to large groups. The app will offer in-app purchases as a way for Nintendo to partially generate revenue, and will also include virtual currency rewarded to users to spend on their Miis.

Miitomo is currently only available in Japan, and Nintendo hasn’t released a timeframe for availability in other markets. The long-standing gaming company is planning to release four more mobile apps over the next year,  some of which are expected to include some classic Nintendo properties.
