Rick McCallum Hints That Star Wars TV Show May Never Happen

Rick McCallum, Lucasfilm’s executive producer, recently talked about the Star Wars live-action TV project that was announced towards the end of the SW prequel era.  Honestly, I kind of forgot about the live-action Star Wars TV show because nothing has been said about it for a few years.  I figured that Lucas caught enough sh*t about the prequels that he decided not to show off his Star Wars baby anymore, but I guess that’s not the case.  In a recent interview with Czech Position he revealed that the Star Wars TV series has been put on hold because it’s too ambitious (aka too expensive).  Supposedly there’s over 50 hours of Star Wars TV scripts, but due to the fact that the show requires massive amounts of digital animations they can’t be shot for a reasonable price on the small screen.

In fact, he hinted that the series may never make its debut because the state of TV these days is all about reality.  He said, “Network television and cable television as we know it are completely imploding, so we’re not really sure that in five years’ time we can release a dramatic one-hour episode because it is all reality TV now.”  I don’t know about you, but to me that says this thing is never getting made.  Sadly, I don’t think I really give a sh*t either.  Six years ago maybe, but these days I’ve become so jaded with the prequels that I don’t know if I could stomach another round of live-action Star Wars bullsh*t.  I’m fine with the Clone Wars cartoon, which keeps getting better with each new season.

The last interesting thing that McCallum pointed out in the interview is that the whole Star Wars in 3D project may stop at ‘The Phantom Menace’ if it doesn’t do well in 2/2012.  Considering that Lucasfilm is starting with Episode 1, McCallum’s statement could spell doom for Episodes 4,5, and 6 in 3D.  What are your thoughts on these matters?  Will you care if the Star Wars live-action TV show never gets made?  How about if ‘The Phantom Menace’ is the only SW movie to get the 3D treatment?  Let us know using the comments section below.  You’ve been caring much less about Star Wars news these days…
