After a five-year hiatus, the Rock Band series is returning. Rock Band 4 is coming to Xbox One and Playstation 4 this year.

The developers at Harmonix thought the market was ready once again for a music-genre game. Chief Creative Officer Alex Rigopulos told IGN that, “when we stopped developing Rock Band 3 [in 2010], clearly the market needed a break. But since then we’ve been paying close attention to what our community has been saying about it. There’s been this steadily growing crescendo of fans saying, ‘Hey Harmonix, what the hell? It’s time! Why haven’t you announced a new Rock Band? We’re ready for it!’”

While a lot of the specifics are still unknown, there are some details that were made available. On-disc music from Rock Band 3 is not available nor is music from Beatles: Rock Band. Xbox One users can import DLC from Xbox 360 only and PS4 users can import DLC from PS3 only for no fee. It is unclear whether the instruments used with Xbox 360 and PS3 will work on the newer systems, since the new systems use a different method of wireless communication, but Harmonix is working with Microsoft and Sony to try and make that a possibility.

Finally, Harmonix is seeking to make this new iteration more of a live service as opposed to yearly entries to the series. They are saying that the goal is to add new functions and material incrementally to the Rock Band 4 foundation instead of releasing a new game each year.

Still, starting arranging your own concerts and printing some t-shirts. Get ready to rock in your living room once again in 2015!
