Rogue One Filmmakers Finally Speak on the Reshoot Rumors
The Internet went into a tizzy a few weeks ago when it was reported that Disney was planning to reshoot 40% of Rouge One: A Star Wars Story, which we discussed in posts and in podcasts. Now the filmmakers have finally opened up about the rumors to EW and cleared up any of the confusion as to why these reshoots were taking place.
Gareth Edwards, the film’s Director, told EW, “I mean it was always part of the plan to do reshoots. We always knew we were coming back somewhere to do stuff. We just didn’t know what it would be until we started sculpting the film in the edit.” That’s a great canned answer, but EW prodded him further on what the shoots may entail, to which Edwards responded, “There’s lots of little things that we have to get, but it’s all little things within the preexisting footage.” This means the rumors about 40% of the film needing to be redone are nothing but rumors, which is great news.
What’s even more reassuring is a statement from Kathleen Kennedy, the film’s Producer and Lucasfilm’s President, who touched on the fact that the reshoots are being done to add levity and lighten the tone of the film, which has always been dubbed as a war movie. She said, “There’s nothing about the story that’s changing, with a few things that we’re picking up in additional photography. I think that’s the most important thing, to reassure fans that it’s the movie we intended to make.” That statement to me is even bigger than what Edwards had to say, because my biggest fear about the the reshoots were that they were being used to make the film more kid friendly when it really shouldn’t be.
You should check out the full article, which also touches on if the film will sport the iconic Star Wars opening crawl, or other Star Wars film tropes, which Kennedy may want to get away from for these standalone Star Wars films. Either way it’s great to finally hear from the filmmakers on Rogue One’s reshoots, so hopefully all of us fanboys and girls were just overreacting to nonsense when the rumors first broke.
