Potential SPOILERS for those not wanting any detailed Captain Marvel plot points.
Entertainment Weekly visited the Captain Marvel set to interview Samuel L. Jackson, and the long time MCU actor revealed some interesting plot points for the film.
The first key plot point the Nick Fury actor confirmed is the fact that the Tesseract Cube will make an appearance in the movie. In particular, Fury will see it for the first time while on a Kree ship with Carol Danvers. Apparently Fury is screwing around with her cat/Flerken when he sees the cube. He explained it to EW by saying:
“I’ve heard the cat referred to as a Flerken. I didn’t know what that meant, so I vaguely have an idea now what that means,” Jackson said. “And we’re actually entering a ship that belonged to a doctor from Carol Danvers’ past. She’s trying to find some answers to what happened, why he was on Earth and what that whole power core thing — Seems like the Tesseract has been the constant in all these movies.”
So that is a fairly big reveal, and I’m sure it will have implications for the MCU, and possibly explain how Carol became Captain Marvel in the first place.
Jackson wasn’t done dropping plot bombs though, or at least revelations about Captain Marvel’s abilities, because he also revealed that Carol has a power that no other MCU character has. This power is none other than time travel, which will clearly have implications for Captain Marvel’s role in Avengers: Endgame. Jackson revealed her time travel power to EW when talking about how powerful the character is:
“She’s pretty much the strongest character — in terms of someone with powers are able to do things — in the Marvel universe, so, for Carol Danvers to be that person and for Brie to become that person, it’s gonna be a dynamite thing.”
“I mean, [the Avengers] are up against some really, really tough odds right now — we saw throughout Infinity War — so now we know that we need something that’s as powerful as Thanos, and at some point, we’ll find out how powerful she is and all the things that she’s capable of. She’s one of the few people in the Marvel universe that can time travel, so…”
To me this is the biggest reveal to date for Captain Marvel, because her ability to time travel fits perfectly with what will more than likely need to be done in Avengers: Endgame to undo Thanos’ snap. It also makes me even more interested for the film, because I’m becoming more and more intrigued by this character, and how she will fit into the MCU moving forward.
Captain Marvel hits theaters on March 8, 2019.
