Sea of Thieves Scale Test To Give Players Another Crack at the Game

Microsoft has announced that Rare’s Sea of Thieves will undergo a series of scale tests starting this weekend, which will allow Xbox Insiders and Closed Beta testers access to the game. The scale test is meant to literally beat the hell out of the game’s servers and code, so the play experience may not be ideal, but it is a chance to return to the high seas if you didn’t get enough during the closed beta test in January.

The first of these begins on Friday, February 16 at 2 a.m. PST (10 a.m. BST) and concludes on Sunday, February 18 at 2 a.m. PST (10 a.m. BST), and is only open to Xbox Insiders and Closed Beta participants. More details on the test can be found below. There will be another Beta too, so stay tuned for those details.

About the Sea of Thieves Scale Test

Please note that the sole purpose of these tests is to test servers at a high scale of player concurrency, evaluating server stress and identifying areas for continued improvement ahead of launch. While you’re welcome to partake in the tests, this added scale is expected to bring to light issues that Rare can learn from and address, and is not reflective of the final game. Issues may include sessions getting interrupted, inability to join the game at certain times during the weekend, and hiccups when using shops in-game. Content will purposefully be similar to the Closed Beta, restricted to the Gold Hoarders trading company and accompanying Voyages, and there is no NDA.

Stay tuned for another Beta in the future, and we’ll have more to share soon. Please head over to for full details on the scale tests and future updates.
