Indie games are usually a hit or miss for me. They can be true diamonds in the rough, or just another self developed piece of garbage. This second sentiment is not true for Seasons After Fall. Let me start by saying that this game is absolutely BEAUTIFUL. Want me to say that again because I don’t think you quite understand, B-E-A-UTIFUL. In Seasons After Fall you play as a spirit of the forest who takes residence inside of a fox. Yes this sounds morbid but trust me, it’s pretty cool. The fox and the spirit almost have a mutual agreement. The point of the game is to visit all four Guardians of the Seasons to restore the full season cycle to the world.

If you like games like Ori and the Blind Forest then this game is definitely for you. Seasons After Fall is a side scrolling adventure game. There are new mechanics that get introduced as you get further into the game. For example, after unlocking the ability to master the seasons, you can freely choose between them as you unlock them. The winter season power will freeze water torrents and make certain creatures act in a different way. Spring makes it rain on the map, making areas with water have more water in them. Each area of the game is beautifully hand crafted, which is an art that goes over looked in gaming these days. The art changes each time you shift seasons as well. When it’s winter, there is snowfall, with spring you bring rain. I feel as though I should mention the narration in the game. The game is narrated by a female disembodied voice from the forest. The voice was nice to listen to and went along with the theme of the game.

Meeting the Guardian of Fall.

Different areas of the game have puzzles that you will need to solve to continue. All of these puzzles revolve around changing the seasons to your will. Sometimes you will need to freeze water to get where you need to be. You will need to figure out which season to switch from to continue on your journey. Not only does the art change when you change seasons, but the music changes as well. The sound in the game is really nice to listen to, it really compliments the setting of the game. There are a couple things though that I found in the game that, albeit small, were things that affected the gameplay.

I noticed there was a little bit of input lag between movements when playing as the fox. This sometimes made me miss a jump, or fall of a ledge as the game didn’t pickup my jump input. The other thing that I’d like to point out is that the main menu almost blends in with the background behind it. This made it hard to read the selections on the main menu. Though I knew where I was navigating to, for other players this could be a hinderance. There wasn’t much in the way of combat or anything like that in Seasons After Fall. Seasons After Fall is a game that anyone could sit-down and play after a long day and just relax. The story really brings you in and you get attached to the characters. I felt like I needed to be the fox’s best friend, or have it by my side at all times. The game tells a great story backed by amazing art, sound and well put together mechanics. I would recommend this title to any gamer, casual or hardcore.
