Spoilers for Star Wars: The Last Jedi will be present, so proceed at your own risk.
Andy Serkis is out promoting Black Panther thanks to his Ulysses Klaue role, but while talking with Screen Crush he offered up some interesting insights into another villain he’s played on the silver screen. That evil doer is of course Supreme Leader Snoke, and Serkis hinted that the character’s mysterious backstory may still get explained in a future Star Wars movie.
While talking with Screen Crush Serkis was asked if he ever discussed Snoke’s past with J.J. Abrams and Rian Johnson, and he went on to say:
“We did, yeah. We’ve talked about it. We wanted to keep it a mystery and, you know by the way, it is Star Wars so who knows what might happen. Without giving anything away.”
If you really analyze that statement, it seems as if Serkis is either jerking the interviewer around, or he’s actually confirming but not confirming that Snoke’s past may be explored a bit in future Star Wars films. It would be odd to say, “Without giving anything away,” if there truly isn’t anything to give away right? To me, that qualifier hints that we could see a bit of Snoke’s past — possibly in Episode IX — but it’s hard to say if Serkis was just having fun, or if his words had any real meat to them.
I do believe a short look at Snoke’s past could work in Episode IX, but I still contend that Snoke’s backstory will be mostly fleshed out in a book, or comic book run. I just don’t think he has much of a place in the films after his demise in The Last Jedi, so I believe the print mediums will be the most likely homes for a detailed look at Snoke’s rise to infamy.
