The works of H.P. Lovecraft have inspired countless writers, filmmakers, and even some great video games. The most well-received game based of the Lovecraftian mythos was 2002’s Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem. The game was received well by critics and praised by many gamers for its deep magic system and remarkable story intertwining unspeakable horrors and ancient old gods.
For years, cult Eternal Darkness fans have begged for a sequel, hoping for a new game to jump back into a world of terrifying creatures and beings older than the universe itself, but their cried have not been answered – until now.
Yesterday, Precursor Games confirmed that they are in development of an episodic game entitled Shadows of the Eternal. Shadows is the spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness and based off of the trailer released yesterday, the two games will share very similar themes. Precursor announced that the Shadows will be released initially for the WiiU and PC and that the story will be told over twelve separate episodes.
Precursor has stated that they will be launching a crowd funding effort this Monday (May 6th), in hopes to raise 1.5 million to help with development costs. Upon reaching this goal, Precursor has promised tons of stretch goals along the way, including additional characters and platforms for the game to be released on.
While initial plot details are thin, Precursor revealed the following to IGN:
When Detective Paul Becker is called to one of the bloodiest gang massacres in Louisiana state history, only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections will uncover the truth about the ‘Eternals’.
Featuring an ensemble cast of heroes and villains, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of history throughout Egypt, England, Hungary, and the United States. Players will question the perception of reality as they try to balance the mechanics of combat, magick, and sanity events to progress through the adventure.
Shadow of the Eternals will take players on a memorable journey throughout time; weaving historical fact with disturbing fiction to create an experience unlike any other.
Even with these thin details, it’s pretty hard not to be excited. Precursor has said that the next week will bring many more details about Shadows of the Eternal, including some highly desired gameplay footage. Watch out, horror fans, Cthulhu is coming.
