There have been very few details about what Zack Snyder and David Goyer’s ‘Man of Steel’ plot will be about, but some light may have been shed on the topic today. Rather than focus on the Superman stories that we’ve come to know such as the Reeves’ classics, and the 2006 ‘Superman Returns’, Snyder and crew look to be putting a new spin on the superhero in their version of the franchise. Rather than take the usual approach of making Superman everyone’s favorite man in tights, the ‘Man of Steel’ version of the caped crusader isn’t entirely sold on is role as the Earth’s protector.
Production Weekly offered up the information below, which hints at this different tone for ‘Man of Steel’:
“Clark Kent is a freelance reporter in his early 20’s, traveling all around the world covering various news stories. However, Kent is forced to fly back into action to attain a fleeing assassin instead of covering an ethnic conflict between the Ghuri and Turaaba clans in West Africa. Upon his return to form, Kent returns to Smallville to learn more about his origins and become the hero he was born to be.”
Die hard Superman fans may find this plot to be similar to Mark Waid’s Superman: Birthright series, which featured an almost identical plot to the speculative one above. I’ve never read this series (reading hurts my feeble brain), so I can’t fully comment on the similarities between the two, but from the light reading I’ve done in the topic the plots are in fact very similar. If ‘Man of Steel’ does move in this direction the only major difference between its plot and Superman: Birthright, is that in the comic the villain is Lex Luthor, where in the movie it’s going to be General Zod. I dig the plot’s potential, so let’s just hope that Snyder doesn’t let us down. You’ve been wanting to see a Superman that isn’t loved by the world…
