Star Trek Beyond: The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow Video Review
Star Trek fans — well those who like J.J.’s take — Titan Books has a new art book that may tickle your fancy if you’re into collecting these types of books or are just a Trekkie. The book is Star Trek Beyond: The Makeup Artistry of Joel Harlow, and it features 208 glossy pages full of some of the most amazing looking practical alien makeup I’ve ever seen. What’s even better is that the artist himself describes every single alien he created, so it’s not only a visual treat, but it’s also intellectually stimulating.
The book is broken down into five chapters, and the opening few setup the film, as well as Harlow’s career. The chapters that follow then cover the makeup for each character in the film that required a major transformation to execute their role. It’s insane to see some of the makeup jobs that had to be done each day for these characters, and every image featured is a work of art. This book may also be useful for makeup artists thanks to Harlow’s deep insights.
