‘Star Wars Resistance’ Anime Series Coming to Disney Channels This Fall
Lucasfilm and Disney have officially announced that the rumored Star Wars Resistance project has been ordered for Disney’s channels, and production has begun to bring the anime series to Star Wars fans this fall. The series is created by none other than Star Wars animation God Dave Filoni, who has championed Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and Star Wars Rebels previously. Both of which feature some of the best Star Wars tales to date if you give them a chance.
Star Wars Resistance will follow Kazuda Xiono, who is a young pilot that gets recruited by the Resistance. It will be set prior to the events of The Force Awakens, and it will also feature appearances from Poe Dameron and Captain Phasma who will be voiced by Oscar Isaac and Gwendoline Christie respectively. Xiono will serve as a Resistance spy, and he will be tasked with keeping tabs on the growing First Order threat. BB-8 will also play a part in the series, and I would expect a few other familiar faces to make cameos such as 3PO and R2, as well as General Leia, or even Amilyn Holdo. Those are just guesses though, because the press release only names BB-8, Poe, and Phasma as being officially involved.
According to Filoni, Resistance came from his fascination with WWII era fighter pilots and planes.
“The idea for ‘Star Wars Resistance’ came out of my interest in World War II aircraft and fighter pilots” said Filoni. “My grandfather was a pilot and my uncle flew and restored planes, so that’s been a big influence on me. There’s a long history of high-speed racing in Star Wars, and I think we’ve captured that sense of excitement in an anime-inspired style, which is something the entire team has been wanting to do for a long time.”
Considering his previous two series have featured some of the best Star Wars tales around, and easily the best prequel era stories in the galaxy, I have no doubt that this series will be worth tuning into this fall on the Disney Channel in the U.S., or on Disney XD at a later date for the rest of the world. Stay tuned for more Star Wars Resistance updates as they become available.
