If you’re a fan of science fiction films, then there’s a great chance you’ve seen more than a few of Syd Mead’s designs, even if you never knew who he was. Mead has worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest sci-fi projects, which include but are not limited to Star Trek, Blade Runner, Alien, and Blade Runner 2049. His art work has been the basis for all of the film’s visual aesthetics, and he truly has shaped what future worlds look like in cinema.
Thanks to a new art book from Titan Books, you can now see and appreciate all of Syd’s work in one convenient package. The Art of Syd Mead: Visual Futurist features over 250 pages of the artist’s work, as well as insights about his design choices and how he felt while working on certain films. It’s a fantastic book for movie fans, but also for graphic design fans, as it provides commentary on Syd’s motivations and inspirations, as well as a peek at his massive portfolio of work and progressions.
