The EB Staff Celebrates Nintendo’s 125th Birthday

On September 23rd, Nintendo celebrated its 125th birthday! Although they haven’t been producing video games the entire time, Nintendo (which roughly translates to “leave luck to heaven”) has been entertaining millions whether it is home consoles, handhelds, or their original raison d’être, playing cards!

Nintendo was originally founded as a playing card company in 1889 and found great success marketing cards for their original game, Hanafuda. Their success with electronics and home entertainment didn’t begin until the mid-1970s with a few arcade titles, but would gather momentum in the 1980s with the success of Donkey Kong, the Game and Watch series, and then their home video game console juggernaut the Nintendo Entertainment System (the Family Computer or “Famicom” in Japan).

To help celebrate this milestone, the writers of Entertainment Buddha submitted their picks for favorite games, systems, characters, their favorite memories with a Nintendo game/system, and even their choice for games and system that was their least favorite. It’s a celebration of all things Nintendo and you can join in by submitting your own selections!

For each of the questions, every EB writer submitted their own answer. Choices with multiple selections have the number of submissions in parentheses. To allow for the broadest selection, any game that was released exclusively onto a Nintendo system and not another major console is eligible.

Some interesting qualitative patterns emerge. Almost all of the favorite game choices are at almost 20 years old, the favorite systems were divided between handhelds and home consoles, and a lot of the favorite memories associated with Nintendo involve local multiplayer games with friends. The Wii was the least favorite system for most and the GameCube was the system more EBers wish they had more experience with. Can you cross off all of the suggestions that every gamer needs to experience?
