The SoundWorks Collection has put together a very informative behind the scenes look at the sound design process of the recently released smash-hit, Gravity (Review.) The short documentary goes into the movie magic the film’s sound team had to employ to recreate the muffled sounds of space that astronauts hear from within their suits.
Gravity relies heavily on atmosphere to tell its tale, and sound is key in pulling off the illusion that Bullock and Clooney are actually floating in Earth’s orbit like real space faring astronauts. The attention to detail in Gravity’s sound design is flawless, and at times the audio track provides more tension than the actual footage playing out on screen. The claustrophobic sound profile of the film is truly one of its greatest assets, so if you’ve seen the movie and want to learn more about its creative processes, then you should definitely head on down past the break to check out “The Sound of Gravity.”
